According to Gee Discourse is writing, doing, valuing, being, believing in one big combination. .For example some of my main Discourses are being student, son, brother, friend, and athlete. Those five things define me by how I act while i’m around teachers or when I am home with my family. What i am trying to say is that we are different people depending on who we are with. You get discourse by being on a team, liking certain things, being born into it, what race you are, if you are poor or rich, if you are lazy or hard-working. Discourse define us but you as a person also get to decide what discourse you are meant to have. In the end of it all discourses are like labels. Use what not to do to get discourse instead of just ways to get one.
Discourses do many things for us. They put you in groupings with people similar to you and that you can form bonds with. Discourses also give you as a person definition and defines how you act around certain people. In order to be someone in the world you have to be built with many discourses. “A dominant discourse gives you the acquisition to obtain social goods”.(gee explains) They give you money, power and social status. A non dominant discourse give you valuable things that isn’t worth actual money like friendships.
